In rehearsal today we had to get into small groups and create still images in the style of Bollywood dance. Before the lesson I had done some research on Bollywood dance and had a little look at what all of the mudras symbolised and how they were supposed to be performed accurately. Throughout the lesson We had to consider our positioning, precision, control, balance, awareness of dynamics and awareness of space when creating these images in our groups, We then had to create transitions from one to another. This is something me and my group struggled with as our transitions weren’t as creative and in sync as we had liked them to have been. I need to make sure that throughout this dance, I am keeping my energy up and really communicating the fun Bollywood style. Here are some examples of the positions my group and I created. My goal for next week is to improve on my focus when in rehearsals this means not letting anyone distract me and just keep focuses on the dance.
Position 1
. Flexed fingers
.Variety of levels
.Mudras
In this pose we are creating mudras with our hands, we decided to use a variety of different levels to make the movement a lot more effective. After doing research i could see that these heights create more depth and is more eye catching. We made sure to extend our arms and legs to create a nice shape. We also made sure to stretch our fingers to create a proper flexed mudra.
Position 2
.creative
.mudras
.precision
.turned out feet
With some influence from pictures of Bollywood dance we had already seen; we came up with this as the first position. In order to construct proper mudras, we had to first ensure that our hand positioning was strong and precise. In order to ensure that our arms were in the right position and at the right height to provide the desired illusion, we had to be very conscious ofour spacial awareness.
Position 3-
Video of my groups small transitions into a Bollywood still image-
After we come up with ideas in our small groups we were then asked to join the two groups to put all of our movements together which I personally think was successful considering it takes a lot of practise because of precise movements. I feel we all worked really hard, This is because we merged our positions together to create a big picture all as one group which looks very effective. See video below
During today’s Bollywood rehearsal, we began by going through the small snippet of choreography from last week, we then added in anyone who was absent from the week before so that they could pick up the dance and fill in the gaps. To begin with Our timing was off the first time, so we went over the transitions and then after hearing the changes in the music so we could understand when to change position. We then began learning the start phrase of the dance that our teacher Tanya had choreographed for us to perform in our showcase. In this dance we use a lot of unison and tempo, which means it is very fast paced and hard to keep up with the music at times especially if you don’t know the counts properly ,this needs to be precise and in time to have the desired effect. We all have to make sure we keep our feet in correct positioning, starting with having them turned out and keeping them turned out when we move into different positions, changing to parallel feet when needed. Feet are a huge part of the Bollywood style, so this stylistic feature is vital. There is also a gap in the choreography and then a strong and sudden movement we have to strike, it's important that we stay in time and strike this position with strength to match the music. From watching the rehearsal video back, I need topracticing this grounded movement with music to improve for next session. I also need to work on my facial expressions as that is a big part of Bollywood, I plan on learning the choreography properly and fully, then applying facial expressions later on in the rehearsal process
Wednesday 18th January
Although todays lesson was very short it was still really helpful. At the start of todays lesson we were given a workshops by the company ctc we were taught a small section of a jazz, communication dance. This was a really fun dance to perform as it’s all about being sassy and feeling good about yourself we were also told some important things about our university audition that we shall all take on board and consider when auditioning for places. As there were quite a thew people of todays lesson it was really hard for us to learn any more or the dance as we would just have to go all back over it again the next week to teach everyone that wasn’t in and it would have been hard to mark where everyone should have been so for todays lesson we just went over what we had already learned from last week so we could completely polish of and try to keep in time with the tempo and pace of the song as that’s something we all struggles with last week. We then learn some new Bollywood poses which include different levels and mudras. My goal for next week is to completely feel comfortable with the first section of the dance whilst using expression and showing that enjoyment in my dancing that Bollywood brings so I am ready to learn and go on to the next section.
-As you can see within the work shops we done loads of stretching and corner work to prepare us for our dance lesson.
Wednesday 25th January
At the start of this session, we made sure to fix the spacing of the still images placed after the first phrase. We went over this new spacing, making sure we were creating symmetrical images that look pleasing to the audience. In order To complete this we need to make sure we are fully extending out arms and hands to complete each mudra properly. We also went over our transitions from one image to another to make sure they were seamless and worked for each position, adding in turns and different transitional movements to complete this. I think this section now flows a lot more, overall looking a lot smoother. We also went over the first phrase again, looking specifically at the timing of the scooping motion nearing the end of the phrase. This was helpful to me as my timing on that part was incorrect the last time, we had run the dance, after listening to the music/rhythm of the song, the timing is a lot clearer to me now and now this movement looks a lot cleaner. After watching back the video I do need to make sure I am fully in the plie so that I can complete this movement with strength and accuracy. I feel like every lesson the Bollywood dance becomes more enjoyable as its something we never explored and its fun to learn all the different mudras in the correct way.
group video of Bollywood-
small group of bollywood-
after learning and going over the new sections of Bollywood we got put into small groups based of who we were close to so that we could create our own 2 counts of 8 to add into the piece and this is what me and my group came up with, we used mudras and levels
8th February-
This lesson was a challenge as we missed 2 weeks of our rehearsals therefore a lot of people forgot the dance and you could see not many people went over the dance in their spare time so it took a lot longer. we practised our small group parts to add into the main performance to make it more effective.

Stylistic features of contemporary Contemporary dance background and where it originated- Contemporary dance began at the start of the 20th century when US dancer Isadora Duncan (1878–1927) broke away from ballet and developed her own, more natural style . Contemporary dance has many different styles, some of them closely linked to music, such as jazz, rock and roll, and hip- hop. Around the 1980s, the term "contemporary dance" was created by a wave of new dancers who did not want to adhere to rigid classical ballet and lyrical dance forms, but instead sought to explore the realm of revolutionary unusual movements drawn from all dance traditions around the world. Contemporary dances, as a result, do not use fixed moves, but rather attempt to develop completely new forms and dynamics, such as quick oppositional moves, shifting alignments, expressions of raw emotions, systematic breathing, dancing moves performed in non-standing positions (for example, lying on the floor), an...
Evaluation of the performance of Bollywood dance The evaluation of my performance of Bollywood, reflecting on both my weaknesses and strengths . Strengths The first skill that I feel majorly improved during my rehearsals for Bollywood was my musicality.I feel that this skill has certainly improved from previous shows due to this time doing more research and learning more about the dance style and culture behind it. I really wanted to engage the audience by fully showing the characteristics of Bollywood I believe this was evident throughout the final performance of Bollywood video as you can see I was always fully engaged in this character from my facial expression to my body language and movements. my musicality has always been something that I have struggled with in previous shows as I’ve always felt that I’m not perfectly in time with the music and...
