1.1 style
After taking part in rehearsals of Bollywood I feel that I most definitely learnt a lot about the style of Bollywood, after doing loads of research on the stylistic features and characteristic's of Bollywood (these can be seen on my blogger) I gained a lot more of an understanding about the context behind it and the specific culture. From gaining a broader understanding of the style I was able to give an accurate interpretation of the choreography as well as using my characterization and facial expression in order to make the performance as effective as possible. When performing we were able to wear some pretty Bollywood consumes that were deigned the exact way that professional Bollywood dancers would wear them, they were decorated with sequins, Jewels and bright color's, this really helped me as it allowed me to feel more deeply into my character and I was able to have a lot more fun and enjoy myself whilst performing which then enabled me to perform to the best of my ability throughout. During our Bollywood rehearsals as a class we had to ensure that we were fully focused at all times so that we were really able to embody the style. Due to this style being new to me to begin with it was really hard to pick up the movements quickly and I struggled to do them in the correct way, this included the perfect turned out feet and lifted upright body, after practicing over and over and nailing the choreography i was then able to focus more on how I presented myself therefore improve y posture and ability to allow the moves to flow a lot more. When first going over all the the hand gestures and mudras i could see that i was struggling and couldn't do them as strong as i would have liked them to be, this really pushed me to improve and do more research as it is really important that these movements were very precise and done in the correct way as it may be offensive to the culture if done in the wrong way. Following on from this, I can say that I successfully used my facial expressions and characterisation to convey the spirit of each section of the dance, you can see that I used strong, powerful expressions for the first part of the choreography as the movements/music are hard and sharp, then contrasting this with bright, cheerful facials to mirror the change in movements/music. This emphasised the style of Bollywood, being both a powerful and joy filled dance genre.
1.2 qualities
After watching back the final performance of the Bollywood dance I can clearly see my effective use of dynamics, techniques, use of space, expressions, musicality and rhythm, using these qualities to create a technically accurate and precise performance. Right from the beginning I really engaged myself into the style and I was intrigued to find out more about the style as-well as the culture behind it which have me more of an understanding of the different techniques used for example the hand gestures and mudras that where used throughout.
My use of accurate dynamics were Continuously shown throughout this performance, this can be seen in the opening section of the choreography. As you can see, I use contrasting harsh/soft dynamics to add texture and connect the movements with the music. You can see me doing this, when the music slows down, and I start doing more elegant, soft movements whereas when the music speeds up you can see my movements beginning to be more sharp and precise. This allowed me to empathise moments in the music and show the audience that I understood the music I was dancing to as well as the style. Another section in which I really ensured i effect performed the style was in the section we link our arms together and slowly wind them around are heads continuously whilst moving our hips round in circuses to create a slow figure eight, I feel this really allowed me to fully embrace the style and use of the costumes as the costumes we where wearing we’re belly dancing/Bollywood costumes. In order to make my performance more effective I used my technical accuracy throughout this performance, consistently considering how I am placing my movements/limbs, elongating and stretching my hands to create accurate mudras and using my past dance knowledge and physical skills to perform an accomplished performance with technical accuracy throughout. One thing that was really hard to maintain to begin with was my spacing as me and Kayleigh kept clashing arms as we were very close however as u can see on the video we decided or would be easier if I put my arm slightly more forward in front without it being noticeable to ensure that we won’t clash arms mid performance as it may have slightly thrown us of the routine, im the final performance I can see my spacing was perfect I was always seen and in the correct spacing I done this to insure a smooth run of the dance.one thing that i really focused on to make sure my spacing was correct was watching back previous rehearsal videos and watching how I was moving around the space, making sure each transitional movement was the same every time we rehearsed so I didn't cause or create any collisions with my class mates, I feel this really helped as to begin with I was worried about knocking into someone vice versa as it’s a very quick and upbeat dance.overall it made me a lot more confident in my spacing. I personally feel that my expressions and characterisation was another strong skill that I used throughout the dance, I made sure that my facial expressions adequately communicated the choreographic intent of the entire dance whether that being serious, sexy or happy. I attempted to align my expressions to each phase of the dance, beginning with a stern and strong expression to match the tone of the opening and ending with a happier and more gleeful expression for the cheerful and lighter moments in the music/choreography. My usage of expressions helped me to completely explain my understanding of the dance, which improved the overall choreography. I also made sure that my musicality was strong and accurate for this dance. I made sure my musical timing was correct, connecting my movements with the music to show accuracy in my musicality. Over all I feel that my previous skills developed within dance really helped me to fully interpret my skills into this dance routine as-well as fully allowing myself to discover this style of dance to a full extent.
1.3 context and interpretation
After watching back my final performance of Bollywood, I feel that I can confidently communicate the meaning of the dance style to the audience through my movements and expressions. I feel doing research on Bollywood outside of lessons and in my free time really helped me and allowed me to understand so much about the style and learn the qualities of it, I also feel that it made me feel more confident when performing it as I saw how it should be performed after watching videos of professionals performing the style. When re watching the videos back I could see that I really improved on the sections that I worked really hard on. Throughout the dance rehearsals I was focused on making sure all of my movements were sharp, precise and strong whenever they needed to be for example in the section when the music is more fast and we do very fast hand movements I wanted to make sure each precise movement was seen very boldly and Clear to the audience as-well as being strong and sharp. In order to do this I watched YouTube videos on professional Bollywood dancers and one of the girl explained how she uses anger and her emotion throughout the dance to emphasis them sharp movements and throw her anger into them to make them more and more powerful, this was a big eye opener to me and I thought it was an amazing ideas which is why I used this technique whilst performing the more serious parts in the video I can see this was successful in the final performance. When performing I particularly focused on the energy of the dancers throughout the pieces i watched; all the movements were carried out energetically, confidently and vibrantly which i believe i represented through my interpretation of the dance and flows movements . The movements they performed were powerful and had meaning behind them which inspired me to do the same throughout the dance .
